Work Flow

Great photography is all about lighting, and using natural light is key for capturing the best images for architectural photography. I use a wide range of tools and devices to maximize natural light throughout the year, including the app shown in the video to the right. The red line marks the summer solstice and the blue line marks the winter solstice.

This use of natural light can be showcased in the above images. These images were from an assignment on the University of Tennessee campus and took three days to complete. The first day was designated for aerial photography. Since I am licensed to operate a drone for photography purposes, the necessary steps were taken with campus police and the Federal Aviation Administration. For the remaining days, I used natural light in both the early morning and late evening. This allowed me to capture images where the north and south sides of the building were illuminated.

I also make use of light with flash and strobe tools. While shooting during the day, I use flash to illuminate shadows created by natural light. I typically take between 20 and 30 shots and blend them in Photoshop to create the perfect image. If I’m shooting while the sun is setting and natural light becomes weaker, I then use strobes to illuminate the entire scene.
